“A paper published in the Journal of Medical Ethics argues that abortion should be extended to make the killing of newborn babies permissible, even if the baby is perfectly healthy, in a shocking example of how the medical establishment is still dominated by a eugenicist mindset…The authors argue that ‘both fetuses and newborns do not have the same moral status as actual persons,’ and that because abortion is allowed even when there is no problem with the fetus’ health, ‘killing a newborn should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled…Merely being human is not in itself a reason for ascribing someone a right to life.'” (Click here to read more about the paper, and here to read the actual paper itself ).
What’s next? We’re only human if we’re over 18 or 21? And once we are older than 50, well, we cease to be human again? Who says when a newborn starts to have the “same moral status as actual persons?” Who’s deciding the legal age at which an infant becomes a human? And when (not if) they take this to the next step, who’s deciding when a person becomes too old to count as human anymore, and can be legally killed?
I hope this makes whoever reads it as angry as it’s making me. If you can find a way for a powerless 17-year-old girl living in Middle Of Nowhere, Vermont to protest this, please let me know.
